How It Works

Services Provided

Generation Hope will provide five major services to Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia teen parents who are attending college:

  1. matching with an organization or individual that will provide financial, emotional, and mentoring support;
  2. facilitation of sponsorships to cover or contribute to their college tuition and books;
  3. assistance with identifying services offered to teen parents by the Scholars’ college and community;
  4. life and career training through The Hope Conference at the end of each academic year
  5. general support that will assist Generation Hope Scholars in achieving their dreams.

Generation Hope will also provide two major services to Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia teen parents who are attending high school:
  1. college preparation and life training through The Hope Conference at the end of each academic year; and
  2. matching with Generation Hope Scholars for a mentoring relationship
Initially, Generation Hope Scholars will provide services to teen parents who are attending (or are planning to attend) the following schools:
Washington D.C.
University of the District of Columbia
Community College of the District of Columbia
 Maryland
University of Maryland
Baltimore City Community College

Prince Georges Community College

Bowie State University
 Virginia
George Mason University
Northern Virginia Community College
Sponsorship Levels:

$2,400 per year / Sponsors full or partial tuition for a Generation Hope Scholar who is attending a four-year college
$1,200 per year / Sponsors full or partial tuition for a Generation Hope Scholar who is attending a two-year college

(Interested in becoming a sponsor?  Contact us)

Generation Hope Scholars will be identified in three ways: 1) recommendations by Washington D.C. area and Baltimore area secondary schools; 2) recommendations by local organizations serving teen parents; and 3) self nomination through the Generation Hope website. Generation Hope will screen applicants based on GPA, an application to include an essay, and an interview. Once the scholars have been chosen, Generation Hope will be responsible for matching scholars with sponsors, accepting and distributing sponsorship funds, and ensuring communication and updates to sponsors at designated times throughout the academic year.

In addition to financial contributions, sponsors may choose to provide in-kind donations for their scholars twice per year. In the Fall and Spring, Generation Hope Scholars will provide their sponsors with a Wish List of needed items for themselves and for their child or children. Examples of items are calculators, notebooks, baby food, baby clothes, winter coats, etc.

The Hope Conference

Pursuing a college degree with a child in tow is a huge undertaking. Recognizing this, Generation Hope will provide scholars with the best tools for personal and professional success through its annual event, The Hope Conference. Every Generation Hope Scholar will be required to attend the full day conference, which will include a morning panel discussion, workshops, seminars, a career and internship fair, and a special event for graduating seniors.

Workshops and keynotes will be conducted by local experts in the areas of self-empowerment, organization skills, parenting, goal setting, healthy relationships, preventing subsequent pregnancies, career preparation, resume writing, etc. There will also be human resources representatives from Washington D.C. and Baltimore area companies at the career and internship fair to conduct one-on-one meetings and resume reviews with interested Generation Hope Scholars.

In addition to serving Generation Hope Scholars, the conference will also have a track for teen parents who are in high school in the greater Washington D.C. and Baltimore areas and who are contemplating college. This track will encourage them to attend college and will give them the information they need to make applying/attending college as easy as possible.
